St. Louis dethrones Grand Rapids as city with 'Best Beer Scene'

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Grand Rapids is no longer home to the best beer scene in America.

At least according to USA Today readers.

The Beer City was dethroned by St. Louis in the newspaper's annual 10Best poll for "Best Beer Scene." Grand Rapids had won top honors in the signature category in 2016 and 2017. It will have to settle for the silver medal in 2018.

The 10 American cities were nominated by a panel of beer experts and voted on by the public. Cities were nominated based on stellar selections of established and up-and-coming breweries, beer bars, brewpubs, beer festivals and thriving homebrew communities.

Grand Rapids finished ahead of Richmond, Va., Cleveland, Fort Collins, Colo., Tampa, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver and Asheville, N.C.

Michigan establishments also finished strong in a slew of other categories. Brown Iron Brewhouse in Washington, Mich. and HopCat in Grand Rapids finished fourth and seventh in the "Best Beer Bar"category, respectively.

That category was won by Bulls Head Public House in Lititz, Penn. HopCat finished in fourth in that category in 2017.

Founders finished 10th in the "Best Brewery Tour" category, which was won by New Belgium Brewing Company - Fort Collins.

Jolly Pumpkin Traverse City finished in fourth place in the  "Best Brewpub" category which was won by Collision Bend Brewing Company in Cleveland.

Finally, Speciation Artisan Ales in Comstock Park and HOMES Brewery in Ann Arbor finished in 10th and 8th place in the  "Best New Brewery" category. That category was won by Barrel Theory Beer Company in St. Paul.
