Iceland, Shocker! Iceland’s Beer Supply Decimated

Gone, baby, gone

Iceland was hit by a national crisis last week when a force of more than 7,000 American sailors and Marines invaded the country’s capital city of Reykjavík, and decimated much of the city’s beer supply.

The sailors and Marines were taking part in NATO’s Trident Juncture, the biggest military exercise that the 29 country alliance has initiated since the Cold War. And once done with the war games the visiting troops wasted no time getting wasted according to Iceland Magazine.

Heading straight from the visiting ships to the nearest bars they could find the visiting regimens decimated what beer was available before advancing relentlessly to the next closest bar like an unstoppable plague of insatiable locusts.

In an effort to stem the escalating crisis, Iceland’s Ölgerð Egils Skallagrímssonar brewery, which makes the popular Gull, went into production overdrive to keep up with the rampage, sending emergency beer shipment to downtown bars at all hours.

And according to Icelandic news site Vísir  the soldiers preferred local beers over imports, and they annihilated Icelandic craft beer stocks as well as the country’s more predictable lagers.

Having wreaked havoc on Reykjavík’s existing beer the troops have shipped off to parts unknown (if they were known perhaps local breweries could at least be better prepared).

As of publishing, American Craft Beer’s requests for comment from both the Pentagon, as well as the White House had not been returned.
