Some jobs actually have a higher percentage of heavy drinkers and higher mortality rates from alcohol consumption, than other jobs. And while some of these jobs might seem obvious, others will surprise you…

And here’s some jobs that according to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) you need to avoid like the plague, if you’re worried you might have a drinking problem

10 – Sales Workers

Jon Hamm as Mad Men’s Don Draper

Over 10% of sales people admit to heavy drinking, a not all that surprising revelation given the sometimes extensive wining and dining that can go with schmoozing a prospective customer. And many traveling salespeople like Mad Men’s Don Draper have the similar issues as truckers; the bar is always a great place to find company when you’re on the road.

9 – Assembly Line Production

Many production jobs can be mind-numbing… the work seldom varies, the hours can be long, and the repetition exhasusting. So why not a drink?

8 – Custodial Workers

Between 9% and 10% of custodial workers admit to heavy drinking and according to SAMHSA they’re just about as likely to use illegal drugs as well. Scrubbing toilets and cleaning up vomit isn’t exactly rewarding or glamorous work…and it can take its toll.

7 – Farmers

Farming is an extremely stressful and very physical field (no pun intended)…And given that many farmers work in solitude on their properties not much stands in the way of going to the fridge and getting a beer from time to time…And over 9% of farmers admit to being excessive drinkers.

6 – Protective Services

Whether they’re security guards, bodyguards, or protective services like the CPS, nearly 9% of workers in this type of work have owned up to excessive drinking.

5 – Architect

This one surprised us.  Believe it or not, 8.3% of architects admit to being heavy drinkers.

4 – Doctors

Most would of us might assume that a doctor would be more tuned into substance abuse issues…and maybe they are but not in a good way. More than 1 in 10 doctors were found to develop either a problem with alcohol and/or drugs over the course of their careers. And Showtimes Nurse Jackie built a long-running series around the issue.

3 – Transportation Workers

Long hours and the stress that comes with having a large number of lives in their hands throughout the bulk of the day, might explain why a little over 11% of workers in transportation field, occupations like sailors, train engineers, airline pilots, and bus drivers, admit to drinking heavily.

2- Lawyers

We’ve all seen movies like The Verdict (or more recently Amazon’s Goliath) so we shouldn’t be surprised to learn that lawyers are twice as much more likely to deal with alcoholism than those in the general population.

1- Bartenders and Servers

Do we even have to explain why more than 12% of bartenders and food service professionals admit to excessive drinking? In fact, bartenders are more than two times more likely to die from alcohol abuse than the average person.
