In a massive loss for beer puns, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl will not be working with Dutch beer company Grolsch on his band’s new beer collaboration.

Instead, in a win for flavour, the band will be working with Sydney brewery Young Henrys on the limited-edition Foo Fighters Foo Town Lager. The brewery is based in Newtown. Get it?

The beer’s a no-fuss four per cent lager that’s low on bitterness and easily washed out if it gets spilled on clothes. Only an idiot would take a cherry lambic into the mosh pit.

“It tastes like a bright summer day encapsulated in a can as black as my jeans. It's a hoppy lager that drinks all night long,” Young Henrys CEO Oscar McMahon tells Broadsheet.

The pairing is happening in conjunction with the band’s Concrete and Gold album and tour. You can grab yourself a can of the brown stuff from two Foo Fighters-themed pop-up bars. Sydney’s Hotel Hollywood will become the Foo Fighters Hotel from January 27 to 30. In Melbourne, quintessential rock dive Cherry Bar will be transformed into Fooie Bar from January 24 to 27. The rest of the country can get hold of the beers from the Young Henrys website after the pop-ups.

The collaboration came about when these were being organised.

“The Foo Fighters have done pop-up pubs in other countries before, and during the planning conversations of the Sydney and Melbourne ones, the question was asked: ‘Is there an Australian beer company we could work with to create a beer for the tour?’

“Thankfully we were front of mind and deemed a good fit from Camp Foo due to the fact YH has a history of working on fun projects with good people and is passionate about spreading the good word on live music in Australia by supporting artists, tours and venues in whatever ways we can,” says McMahon.

Young Henrys isn’t a stranger to musical collaborations. In February it fulfilled its promise to Brisbane rock dogs Dune Rats and crafted a beer with the band when their debut album, The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit, went to number one on the ARIA charts. The brewery also made a beer with DZ Deathrays in 2016.

Take it easy sinking those tins. Getting too sauced and slapping around security with your giant hand will only get you kicked out and a likely criminal record.

The Foo Fighters-themed pop-up will happen in Melbourne between January 24 to 27 at Cherry Bar (103 Flinders Lane) and in Sydney January 27 to 30 at Hotel Hollywood (2 Foster Street Surry Hills).

The Foo Fighters Australian Concrete and Gold tour begins in Perth on January 20. Tickets here.
