UK Beer Sales Fall BY 88 Million Pints In 2017

Pub, UK Beer Sales Fall BY 88 Million Pints In 2017It appears that the Brits drank less beer in pubs last year…In fact Beer sales in Britain’s pubs have fallen by their highest margin in five years according to a leading beer and pub trade organization, and that’s gotta be sobering news for the United Kingdom.

In spite of a rise in overall beer sales (up 0.7% in 2017)  pub and bar sales fell by 2.4%, their highest margin since 2013 and the equivalent of Brits drinking 88 million fewer pints last year.

So what’s going on?

The British Beer and Pub Association  (BBPA) cited a number of reasons for their latest figures, none of them good…including a 3.9% duty increase in March, (read taxes), higher operating costs for pubs including business rates increases (more taxes), and sharply rising employment costs as key reasons for the drop in sales.

BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds saw the latest results as concerning…

“While it is encouraging to see beer sales rise slightly in 2017, it is still hugely concerning to see on-trade sales fall for the seventeenth year in a row. Cutting beer duty is hugely important to community pubs where on average seventy percent of alcohol sold is beer.”
