I'm all for this trend. As I get older and since cutting back on my drinking significantly I just can't do (or more accurately, don't want to do) many higher ABV beers regularly anymore but I still want to enjoy a beer or two AND have something with some flavor. I haven't had Daytime in a long time but I will be on the lookout for it.

Wonder how this tastes, with the low ABV/Calorie this is a great summer beer. Thanks for sharing.

I know session IPAs are fairly well hated around here, but Lagunitas was and still is one of my favorites of the substyle (Easy Jack honorable mention). I used to buy this shit by the case when it first came out. I've always had a feeling it was fairly low in calories (very low residual sugar in the flavor profile) but I didn't think it was that low.

If I'm ever trying to be mindful of the calories I'm drinking (not likely but you never know!) DayTime @ 98 cals for 12oz and Carton Boat @ 120 cals for 16oz are two great hoppy beers to enjoy if you love hops but are trying to conserve caloric intake.

“It is thinner than their standard IPA, without much of a malt backbone—that’s the undeniable truth of most session IPAs—but in this case, I’m okay with it.”

Well, I am personally not OK with “thinner” here. Session IPAs are just too watery for my palate.

    Cheers!

As I recall their Daytime IPA used to be 4.6% abv, so cutting the abv down to 4% helped them get the calories down no doubt. I could see the 4.6% version being dry and light tasting on its own however, seeing as how their New Dogtown is quite dry in my opinion with a good hop bite. I'm personally surprised that beer hasn't caught on more in the US compared with the IPA (from what I can gather), seeing as how it seems more in line with what consumers want (less caramel maltiness, drier taste and more hop forward as a result). It's my personal favorite from Lagunitas.

Patrik, I am a bit embarrassed to ask this question but: when did this become a 'new' beer? How does New Dogtown compare to 'Old' Dogtown?

    Cheers!

P.S. I have a vague recollection that @SFACRKnight has discussed in a past thread that Dogtown (New Dogtown?) is no longer available in his area?

Oh man, I love New Dogtown when it's reasonably fresh. Unfortunately usually they're well over 6 months old when I find them.

I know it's been called New Dogtown since 2012/2013 at least (I recall noticing the "New" moniker when I was living in Arizona).

As for how it differs, i can't speak from personal experience because I've only had "New" Dogtown, not the regular Dogtown. I remember the whole point of it being "New" was the fact that it had newer, citrus-forward hops than the old recipe did. Per the Lagunitas website:

EDIT: So apparently they dropped the "New" Dogtown thing and now it's just plain ol' "Dogtown" again.

Quite confusing but I suppose if all that is available for sale is 6+ months old beer the labeling doesn't matter too much; this would be a non-purchase for me.

    Cheers!

    I bought a six pack.

I'm a sucker for anything that seems like it could be halfway decent at 4% ABV or less.

Bonus, it's in 12 oz. cans too. I like to session when I can. I also remember the old Daytime being good.

Are there no beers from Lagunitas that you do not enjoy drinking?

    Cheers!

There have been a few beer from Lagunitas that I did not enjoy drinking. There are a few from them that have been good, notably Born Yesterday and Brown Shugga. It was always kind of hard to find stuff from them close to fresh where I live so I kind of gave up them. I really gave up on them after they were fully purchased by Heineken.

Dog town us great. Can’t remember the last time I have seen it.

Daytime fractional IPA was a beer I had on tap when it was released. I loved it. Still buy it once or twice a year. Along with Stone go to it’s in my top 3-4 “session” IPA. I also really like NB slowride.

    Enjoy

I, for one, will give it a shot. This weekend is my fantasy football payout party which should provide the perfect venue to give thIs session a session!

I remember the original Dogtown and the whole thing back then was odd and a little confusing to me, as I remember the PA having higher IBUs than the IPA and was more IPA-like. I will have to try the new [old] Dogtown sometime if I come across it fresh.

Just checked the site and their IPA is 6.2%, 1.059 OG, 51.5 IBUs (used to be 45).
    Dogtown is 6.2%, 1.050, 62. Interesting...

I always thought dogtown was a better ipa than their ipa.

Well the New moniker is in the brand name, I had no idea about the chronology but my understanding was simply that it was their pale ale to their IPA. It showed up on shelves here before the IPA did.

Yeah the lack of mentions for it over the years made me think that it hadn't fared well in the US market, and nowadays a pale ale is of course not a hot ticket item. But back in the day I figure it had its chance, and their IPA is after all a big seller for them still.

Your impression of it mirrors mine, good to hear it's not just me :stuck_out_tongue:. I hadn't noticed the difference in OG but that would certainly explain why it's drier at only around 12.5% plato and 6.2% abv (very similar to their Pils in other words), it's quite strongly attenuated. A brut IPA ahead its time? Below are the specs for Sierra Nevada Brut IPA:

    • ALCOHOL CONTENT 6.2% by volume
    • BEGINNING GRAVITY 12.5° plato
    • ENDING GRAVITY 0.5° plato
    • BITTERNESS UNITS 25

The glaring difference between the two are the IBUs. Dogtown being 62, and SN's Brut being 25.

This may take out it of the running as a "Brut IPA", whatever that actually is now.
