Most Fort Collins breweries making fundraiser IPA for California Camp Fire relief

The majority of Fort Collins craft brewers met for breakfast beers, bagels and a collaboration brewing session Tuesday morning at Horse & Dragon Brewing.

The collection of 19 Northern Colorado craft breweries joined more than 1,200 other breweries across the county in making a charity IPA to benefit California Camp Fire relief efforts. The beer is scheduled to be tapped at participating taprooms at the end of December.

The charity beer efforts have been organized by California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., the county’s third largest craft brewery.

“Sierra Nevada is one of the pioneers of industry,” said Horse & Dragon co-founder Tim Cochran. “The response to them asking for help has just been amazing. It is really good leadership on their part.”

Sierra Nevada created the Resilience IPA recipe using common ingredients like two row pale malt, and Centennial and Cascade hops. They’ve shared it with anyone willing to be part of the fundraiser.

“Being in Colorado, we know a lot about fires and how it impacts communities,” said Gordon Schuck, the head brewer at Funkwerks who organized the local  collaboration brewing session. “Seeing what happened in California that was so unprecedented, we wanted to help.

“Everyone came together and it was super easy to get everyone involved.”

Wellington's Old Colorado Brewing brewed their own version.

So did major Fort Collins craft brewers New Belgium Brewing and Odell Brewing last week. Both expect to tap it in mid-December.

New Belgium plans to serve the beer in both its Fort Collins and Asheville, North Carolina, taprooms. New Belgium’s sister San Francisco brewery, Magnolia Brewing Co., also brewed its own batch of Resilience IPA.

“At New Belgium, we believe that business can be a force for good and we like to think that ethos is shared throughout the craft beer community,” said New Belgium spokesman Jesse Claeys.

An Odell Brewing brewer holds up a sample of the mash of Resilience IPA, a fundraiser beer that benefits areas destroyed by the California fires.

Odell plans to ship some of the beer down to its new Denver taproom in addition to serving it in Fort Collins.

“It’s absolutely inspirational to see what the industry is coming together to do,” said Odell brewer Adam D'Antonio.

Resilience IPA is expected to be tapped by New Belgium and Odell in mid-December.

The other collaboration version brewed Tuesday by 19 breweries is scheduled to be tapped at the participating Fort Collins, Timnath and Wellington taprooms at the end of December — the beer won't be distributed to any restaurants.

The proceeds at all of the locations will be donated to the relief funds.

“The craft brewing industry in general is so collaborative it doesn't surprise me that people all over the country are helping out,” Schuck said. “But it’s still amazing to see it all happen.”
