Brewery Obituaries – More San Diego Breweries To Close

In June we reported that Richmond, Virginia-based Twisted Ales had shuttered its doors and later that month that both Denver’s Caution Brewing and Chicago’s Baderbrau we’re ending their run. And now we learn that Intergalactic Brewing and ChuckAlex Independent Brewers will be closing their doors soon, the latest casualties of craft beer’s increasingly brutal new landscape.

Here’s the deal…

Intergalactic Brewingbrewery, Brewery Obituaries – More San Diego Breweries To Close

After five years in action Romona-based Intergalactic Brewing will be closing its doors on July 31st… Founded by Alex Van Horne in 2013 the brewery had been struggling according to the WestCoaster after the science-fiction-themed nanobrewery opened a stand-alone tasting room that never drew the support that was hoped for…

In a Facebook Post, the owner and founder of the company positioned things this way…

“We want to thank everyone for their support, patronage, and love over the last five years. It has been an incredible adventure and not something we will soon forget.

However, on July 31st we will be closing the doors to our tasting room and brewery, ending our over 5 year run.

It has been a pleasure serving you our beers. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed making them for you.”

ChuckAlek Independent Brewers

brewery, Brewery Obituaries – More San Diego Breweries To CloseIn May husband-and-wife entrepreneurs Grant Fraley and Marta Jankowska announced they were relocating moving from San Diego to Denver to pursue new career opportunities. At that time they’d hoped to keep their operation going under the direction of head brewer Samantha Olson.

But last week they let their employees know that they would be closing their doors for good at the end of the month and their satellite “Biergarten” venue on September 2nd.

In a communique to their employees, Fraley and Jankowska reportedly “indicated that they and Olson had made the mutual decision to close, stating that business simply is not as good as it had been in previous years.”

But many industry-watchers have speculated that San Diego’s craft beer scene may have become oversaturated…and we’ll just have to see how 2018 plays out.

But brewery closings in a beer-rich mecca like San Diego is signaling something…and that something may not be ‘all good.’
