New-England style IPAs are the latest darling on Kansas City taps. Brewers in and around the metro have been trying to nail the juicy, hazy style of pale ale. With lots of fruit notes and arresting color, it’s easy to understand the infatuation. That’s why I want you to know that Maine Beer Co. is arriving on shelves and taps this week. The brewery out of Freeport, Maine, is committed to showcasing hops and is, well, from New England. Consider it an assignment in source drinking.

Tap Notes

Black Labs Craft Meadery has just opened a small shop at its production site (15833 S. Mahaffie St., Olathe, Kansas). Open Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. for the time being, Black Labs  will be sampling and selling bottles of their mead. The meadery’s latest pour is End Game, a swig of dessert mead made with cherries, black raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and cocoa nibs.

In the month of November, Apex Aleworks is donating $1 from every full pour of the brewery’s English Mild to the local charitable organization Swope Health Services.

McCoy’s Public House (4057 Pennsylvania Ave.) has Foxy Roxxy (4.5% ABV), a red ale, and Brite Lager (4.5% ABV), a light lager, on tap.

For those seeking a gluten-free option that isn’t yet another cider, Flying Horse Taproom (600 E. 63rd St., Suite #100) has Glutenberg, a gluten-free beer, on tap.

Brewery Emperial has a Doppelbock (7.4% ABV) on tap. This Doppelbock, sometimes called ‘liquid bread,’ because of its dark color and thickness, is made with Munich malt and German hops. This one has crisp, autumn weather written all over it.

Big Rip Brewing Co.’s (216 E. 9th Ave., North Kansas City, Missouri) Pennywise Sweet Tater Ale (5.5% ABV) is back. They’ve also got T.H.I.C. Amber Ale (5.5% ABV), a Marzen (i.e.  full-bodied lager), on tap.

Some days are beer Christmas. The seasonal arrival of Founders CBS a is cause for enough celebration that some local drinkers take time off work to enjoy it as soon as possible. Find out why at Fringe Beerworks (224 SE Douglas St., Lee’s Summit, Missouri) during a Founders tap takeover from 6 to 9 p.m. They’ll be tapping this year’s version and last year’s release of the chocolate and coffee stout aged in bourbon barrels that once held maple syrup. (Yes. Read that sentence again.) Bottles of Founders CBS will hit retailers in both Missouri and Kansas in the early part of this week.

It pays to vote. iTap Crossroads (403 E. 18th St.) is offering half off of your first draft beer if you show up with an ‘I Voted,’ sticker.

Wednesday, Nov. 7

There is no great Kansas ocean, but you can get a taste of the coast at Grinders Stonewall (10240 Pflumm Road, Lenexa, Kansas). They’ll also be tapping Golden Tanager, a New England-style IPA starring passionfruit from Slammed Brewing Co. out of Wichita, Kansas.

Oddly Correct (3940 Main St.) is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a party from 6 to 10 p.m. at Morton Hall (3936 Main St.). They’ll have baristas competing for bragging rights, a collaboration beer with BKS Artisan Ales, and food for sale from the Dead Beet Taco pop-up.

Clouds is a double IPA (8.2% ABV), in which the beer rested atop Guatemalan coffee for 24 hours in order to “impart coffee aroma and subtle flavor while keeping the beer a hazy golden hue.” Oddly Correct roaster Michael Schroeder said it should be a “total citrus bomb.”
