Interesting article and video on usatoday.com:
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/mone...ella-artois-beer-brands-most-growth/38792907/

The video centers more on alcohol consumption in general, whereas the article provides data on beer consumption.

Quite honestly, I've never heard of Steel Reserve (although looking at their portfolio, a few of their products look somewhat familiar). It looks like they are owned by SABMiller.

This particular list uses data from 2012 - 2017 and limits the data to beer brands that shipped at least 1 million barrels in 2017. Realizing that there is some discrepancy in defining what brewer is an independent craft beer company, does anyone know how the largest independent craft beer companies show up in terms of the largest increase in sales over that period?

It would be a brewer that opened during the period, probably later in the period. It is easy to get a large % increase from zero.

    “8. Coors Banquet

    • Sales change (2012-2017): +20.0 percent

    • Barrels shipped in 2017: 1.6 million

    • Market share: 0.8 percent

    • Parent company: Molson Coors Brewing Company”

Wow! I would never have expected that a beer like ‘regular’ Coors would have experienced a 20% increase.

I suppose a ‘half empty glass’ person would say it is because this beer decreased so much prior to 2012 but…

Still, a 20% increase for a non-Mexican AAL is a pretty impressive ‘turn around’.

Anybody have an explanation for this?

    Cheers!

Miller/Molson-Coors is seeing a huge uptick as they are the Radioshack of the beer world from where I stand, for the most part staying out of the way of ABInbev's predatory practices while also not stepping on the toes of Craft beer too much outside of remaining relevant and competitive.

Hmm, that does not seem to bode well for MillerCoors as a successful business!?!

    Cheers!

And still, I only see it on draught at one place in town..Buffalo Wild Wings. I truly enjoy the beer, not the venue.

I cant speak for Wyoming so much but out here in California (I think we have a few of their breweries here) there's a stronger market presence and distributor network. Also we have a literally shit load of dive bars that sell their stuff exclusively and proudly. I not sure why is different east of here but everywhere is different.

Actually being the "Radioshack" means they are staying out of the battle between the other companies and are most likely to survive the long term, by not driving strong marketing campaigns to sully craft beer, and by not "Inbevving" by buying in part or fully, craft breweries and over-marketing them to the point you're sick of them and they run out of business. They have a few "craft" beers in their portfolio but so far haven't been as scandalous with them as Heineken and AB have been. Staying out of the "craft wars" is saving them from where I stand.

Steel Reserve=cheap malt liquor. It takes a steel reserve not to barf after a couple.

If Steel Reserve is a growing beer brand, the economy and health (and peoples ability to make sound decisions) in the US is worse than I ever imagined.

Steel Reserve = Antifreeze. Weird vile shit no matter what flavor they add to it.

I’ve had a couple Steele reserves in my college days. Wasn’t the worst thing in the world. It did get you buzzed for a low price of 2 dollars. I imagine that’s why people are drinking it now... It’s been ten years since I’ve had it and I doubt I’ll ever have it again.

    SBN?
    (Stubby Bottle Nostalgia?).

1981 - Coors Premium (what they were calling Banquet at the time): 10.4 million bbl.

So, nowhere to go but back up, slightly?

IIRC, they've also down-graded it in many markets closer to "popular" price segment?

I doubt that any brewery open after 2012 is selling close to 1,000,000 barrels a year.

Thinking about it more - considering our current national nightmare I can't blame anyone for wanting to drink themselves blind these days. Between that, the economy about to point south, Steel Reserve makes sense.
