Great American Beer Fest 2018 Shows Off America’s Best Brews

If there is something that the United States has excelled at in the last couple of decades, it’s making great craft beer. That skill was on show last week at the 32nd annual Great American Beer Festival, wherein 306 medals were awarded to 280 breweries from (literally) everywhere in the country except Mississippi.

In total, 8,496 professional entries, 101 Pro-Am entries, and 49 collaborations were entered by 2,404 breweries in 102 categories covering 167 styles of beer. Of the entrants, there were 537 first-timers and 31 first-time winners.

Obviously, there were a lot of champions at GABF — not just the 64,000-plus people who drank all that beer (we’re more than a little jealous), but the breweries, the states that the breweries come from, and some the categories as well.

On the brewery side, three producers each took home three medals, the most by a single brewery at this year’s competition. 10 Barrel Brewing Co. of Bend, Oregon, earned two golds and a silver, Alesong Brewing and Blending of Eugene, Oregon won two silvers and a bronze, and Lewis & Clark Brewing Co. of Helena, Montana, snagged a gold, silver, and a bronze. (Lewis & Clark also took home the “Small Brewing Company of the Year” award.)

From the state side of things, you might be able to take a guess from the breweries we just mentioned: Oregon collectively garnered the most medals with 33.

For categories, the Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale was the winner of the fest. Not only was it the first year as a recognized category (one of five new categories), but it had 391 entrants, smashing the previous record of 311 that was set by American-Style India Pale Ale set last year. (In 2018, American-Style India Pale Ale stayed level with 311 entries again.)

In this new category, gold went to Alarmist Brewing (Chicago) for the Le Jus, silver belonged to La Vista, Nebraska’s Kros Strain Brewing Co. for the Fairy Nectar London Double Dry Hopped, and bronze went to Chicago’s Eris Brewery and Cider House for Foiken Haze.

Had enough numbers yet? If you have, great — it’s time to head to your nearest brewery and enjoy a pint of two of (hopefully) award-winning beer. If you want more, a full list of the winners can be found here.

The next Great American Beer Fest will take place October 3-5, 2019. If you want to learn more about the great beers from 2017, check out our coverage of last year’s GABF here.

The 11 Best Cucumber Beers for a Refreshing All-Season Drink
cucumber beers best beer 2021

It’s a little surprising that cucumbers and beer don’t have a deeper history. The refreshing gourd, with its signature green and slightly bitter flavor, plays quite nicely with lighter beer styles.
And it's not just beer. Cucumbers are a great addition to cucumber cocktails, seltzers, mocktails, and more. But as a beer, whether it be a tangy sour or refreshing Berliner Weisse, the cucumber becomes king. With beer, cucumber can impart some coolness to counteract the sizzle of the hops and effervescence, or garden-fresh grassy notes to play off of the acid of a sour beer. In other cases, it can offer a melon rind note that reminds us of hammocks and backyard hangouts.
Even if cucumber is not your thing, though, there's a decent chance you'll like how it operates in the company of hops, malt, and grain. The mashup activates something a little extra in cucumber, a food that's never really been a celebrity but perhaps should be. Long placed under lock and key in the pickle box, the cucumber deserves much more. It's time for its breakout party and these eleven cucumber beers celebrate just that.

The Best Fresh Hop Beers to Drink Now

When it comes to hop-forward beers like IPAs, the fresher the hops, the better -- any good brewer can attest to that. Anybody who has savored the 3-Way IPA or Pliny knows as much. It’s why beer heads scan for canning dates and ask for the just-made stuff. In terms of the extreme seasonality, freshness, and festive atmosphere, the fresh-hop run is the beer equivalent of Beaujolais Nouveau. Taste what they’re so stoked about with these standout fresh-hop beer options with beer glasses.

The 5 Best Hawaiian Beers for Potable Paradise
Best Hawaiian Beers

As big and diverse as our nation is, there’s nothing quite like Hawaii. The Rainbow State touts tropical weather, unmatched geology, mouthwatering beaches, incredible National Parks, and a culture completely its own.
The islands are also home to a surprisingly strong craft beer scene. No, Hawaiians are not harvesting local hops for production like we do on the west coast of the mainland, but locals are taking advantage of select indigenous ingredients and throwing them in tasty batches of brew -- things like coconut, passion fruit, hibiscus, pikake flowers, and more.
Unfortunately, being part of a small enough production scale, a lot of the most interesting beers stay in Hawaii because it really doesn’t make sense for them to cross the Pacific. Yet, as the relatively young scene grows, more and more Hawaiian-made options will likely land on the mainland.
