They had to know this wouldn’t go over well. InBev must have thought f the alliance. We need to target the macro audience as that’s were the greatest opportunity to grow our business is.

ABInBev had to know exactly what would happen, I doubt they do anything without thinking it through. They apparently figured out that going it on their own would be better than an alliance.

Ah, Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors (along with the other "macro" sized breweries) were all* members of the United States Brewers Association and it's successor, The Beer Institute during the "Beer Wars" of the 1970-1990s, which features numerous lawsuits and other formal and PR complaints about advertising, mergers, etc.

    * I think at some point, Miller (then a subsidiary of Philip Morris) did leave the USBA which, after some negotiations and rewriting of the organization's focus, etc., adopting the "Beer Institute" name, Miller re-joined the others - Beer Institute.

Some of the conflicts included AB complaints about Miller's use of non-natural ingredients in Miller Lite, Miller's countering with AB's "Natural Light" brand and AB complaints about Coors' use of high gravity brewing, shipping undiluted beer to Virginia and adding (non-Rocky Mountain) water there, Coors replying that AB also used HG brewing...

I would have assumed that all light beer producers use high gravity brewing. Hell, I use high gravity brewing on occasion, although my dilution occurs at a less efficient point (post-boil, pre-ferment) than those guys. Was the complaint specifically about the water source then?

Yup - exactly. Coors' advertising still stressed their "Rocky Mountain water" even after opening the Virginia packaging plant (took awhile before they started actually brewing there), they were shipping HG beer and adding Virginia water :astonished: and AB complained to (IIRC - not home and can't access my files) the Feds in charge of truth in advertising.

Coors turned around and responded that AB also brewed their beers by the High Gravity process. "Yeah," said AB, "but we add the water at the same brewery where the beer was brewed." Take that!

I came in the back door so I'll have to wait for the kettle and pot to turn around before I can tell which is which.

That’s a great point, obviously they can’t turn craft beer drinkers, but they can fight to make aal drinkers change their brands. Actually it’s a smart fight to make.

Would really like to know what a generic beer ad would look like.

I guess in the same vein as the "Got Milk?" or "Beef, it's what for dinner" ads.

In the UK a few years ago there was a campaign by the brewing industry which produced the ads below.

Definitely a good sign when you're actively opposed to consumers knowing what ingredients go into your product.

    ?
The big brewers are all pretty open about their ingredients. What they oppose is a competitor (AB-InBev) stating their ingredient (corn syrup) as a marketing tactic that only plays to consumer ignorance.

They're open about their ingredients, but also they don't want consumers knowing about their ingredients?

We are talking past each other.

They oppose a competitor manufacturing controversy among ignorant consumers over an ingredient as a marketing tactic.

AB-InBev fully understands how corn is used in brewing and that it's a non-issue to the final beer, because they use it in many AB-Inbev products, like Stella Artois and Natural brands, which conveniently were not mentioned in the Bud Light ads. It is just dirty, cutthroat marketing.

AB-InBev's corn syrup ad is like when Food Babe fussed about Guinness being brewed with isinglass (fish bladder), which got ignorant people to think "ick!" and share Food Babe articles all over social media (i.e. marketing), while anyone who understood how isinglass was used just rolled their eyes at the non-issue.

No one should be surprised, least of all AB-InBev, that their peers don't want to play with them now.

So, AB's got these Busch Light cases on the market :astonished: I guess they're not as anti-corn as those ads suggest a few years back.

According to the listing for Busch Light on AB's Tap Into Your Beer website, the brand uses TWO forms of corn.
