Welcome to another edition of the Beer of the Week!

As always, the Beer of the Week is originally presented on the Arrowhead Pride Tailgate on 610 Sports Radio as part of my Defense and Beer of the Week segment.

This week...was tough.

Due to antiquated distributorship regulations that are kept in place by lobbyists from big beer companies, Kansas and Missouri are without any of the major craft beers from the state of Pennsylvania, including the generally terrible Iron City Beer, who used to be a partner of this week’s opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

So, with that in mind, I picked a brewery from central New York that has some ties to Kansas City’s biggest brewery. This week’s Beer of the Week is Brewery Ommegang Hennepin Farmhouse Saison!

A 7.7% Farmhouse Saison, this beer is highly carbonated with notes of ginger, spices, and orange peel. It’s light bodied and easy to drink with a little bit of funkiness from the Saison yeast. Hennepin is known as the very first American-made Saison, paving the way for Saisons to gain popularity and wide distribution, including one of Kansas City’s favorites: Tank 7.

Brewery Ommegang is located in Cooperstown, New York that opened in 1997, building a traditional Belgian farmhouse as the base of their operations on an old hop farm. Since then, they’ve grown by leaps and bounds, with distribution to 46 states. In 2003, the founders sold their shares to Duvel Moortgat Brewery to help grow and expand their capacity and distribution channels. You might recognize Duvel as the company that recently bought shares of Boulevard Brewing Company to help them grow and expand their capacity as well!

Brewery Ommegang is well regarded for the quality of their Belgian style beers. In addition to Hennepin, they make a fantastic Belgian Quadrupel called Three Philosophers, and a great Belgian Wit for you wheat drinkers called Witte. If you’re new to Belgian styles of beer or an old-timer, you’ll definitely appreciate the quality and craftsmanship that Brewery Ommegang puts into their beers.

So if you can, make sure to swing by your local liquor store and scoop up some Brewery Ommegang Hennepin Farmhouse Saison this weekend!

Check back here this time next week for the new Beer of the Week!
