Algae bloom beer? Craft breweries become voice for clean water

TOLDEO, Ohio – Craft brewery operators whose most important ingredient comes from the nation's lakes and rivers are becoming a strong voice for clean water.

Dozens are teaming up to push the federal government to keep a rule that protects small waterways under the Clean Water Act.

Some beer makers are putting money into preserving rivers and streams while others are selling special batches to promote water protection.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. in Ohio is serving a green ale that looks a lot like the toxic algae that's been fouling Lake Erie.

Colorado's New Belgium Brewing Co. and SweetWater Brewing Co. in Atlanta are giving money to nonprofit groups working on river protection projects.

Brewers say it's only natural that they care about clean water because beer is about 90 percent water.
