Beer Can Improve Your Memory

University of Exeter

We’ve been meaning to write about this recent study…but we keep forgetting.

A new study released the UK’s University Of Exeter has found that in spite of the half-forgotten nights that many of us have lost to over-imbibing,  drinking alcohol could actually help boost memory recall of events and information learned BEFORE that period of drinking.

This is good news that we shouldn’t forget and here’s how the university designed the study…

A panel of 88 ‘social drinkers’ (hey we always get social when we drink) were split into two random groups (we also get random but that’s another thing) and everyone was given a word-learning task.

Each group was then asked to either drink as much as they liked (yes!), or not to drink at all (that’s no fun).

The following day, all the participants returned to repeat the same word task. And university researchers found that not only did the group who’d enjoyed alcohol perform better, but that those who drank more did better than those who drank less…

What can we say?  Good news is good news so were running with this!

The theory that researchers are exploring is that “the hippocampus – the brain area really important in memory – switches to ‘consolidating’ memories, transferring from short into longer-term memory.”

beer, Beer Can Improve Your MemoryAccording to this study, even if you can’t remember some of what you did at the bar last night, you still might excel at what you did earlier in the day!

So drinking alcohol (and in our case, beer) has been proven to help your memory (sort of) – and that the more you drink can (at least for certain kinds of memories) make you sharper.

And that’s something we should never forget
