Georgia Breweries Celebrate Their Liberation Aug. 31 – Sept. 1, 2017
If you’re a craft beer lover, you’ve probably never thought twice about ordering a beer at your favorite brewery. That’s because you don’t live in the state of Georgia. Currently, the only way to enjoy a fresh one at a brewery in this state is to purchase a tour, exchange tickets or tokens, jump through flaming hoops, perform backflips and recite the alphabet backward (well, those first two things at least). All that nonsense is about to change.
Beginning September 1, 2017, Georgia breweries will be granted the ability to sell their product directly to their customers. This comes after a long and collaborative effort by Georgia’s breweries and distributors creating and recreating proposals for the state in the form of State Bills to be approved by the state’s House and Senate and eventually signed into law by the Governor.

Lawmakers, distributors and breweries in Georgia had many beer lovers believing they would never see a day like September 1. Unfortunately, representatives from all sides just could not agree on what was being pushed forward. Breweries and imbibers felt they might be close when SB63 was passed in 2015 allowing breweries to augment their tours. It was not a complete win, but it was progress. With SB 63 in action, breweries were permitted to augment their tours and offer more than the traditional on-premise sampling. Now they could offer “take-home tours” allowing visitors to opt for taking the breweries tour and walking away with sealed bottles, cans, growlers or crowlers. There would be controversy later in the year as the Georgia Department of Regulations implemented their interpretation of the law, but that is a different story.
What is relevant and important now is that Georgia’s breweries are going to experience another change in the laws governing them. Without exaggeration, this will be the most impactful change in Georgia’s brewing laws since 1935. What does this mean exactly? Well, besides handing a brewery employee money and them handing you back a heady beer, a lot actually. It will provide more jobs, prominent growth in small businesses and the local economy, promote tourism, the list goes on.

Come celebrate this joyous day with Athen’s oldest operating production brewery. In honor of such a special event, they are releasing their second collaboration with Richland Rum: an Imperial Milk Stout with Coffee and Chocolate aged on Rum Barrels! The coffee beans and chocolate used in the brewing process were locally sourced from Jittery Joes and Condor Chocolates, respectively.The first 50 people to buy a glass of the Richland Reserve will receive a commemorative glass!

Goodwill is joining Riverwatch Brewery in celebration of the new Georgia law with a ceremonial “First Pint Pour” event on Sept. 1. The Goodwill-Riverwatch fundraiser is benefiting Goodwill’s job training and career development services. A raffle drawing will be held Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. during Riverwatch’s final tour and the winner will be announced at the “First Pint Pour” on Friday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m. at Riverwatch Brewery.
One winner will get the first pint poured at Augusta’s first modern brewery and receive a Chef’s Table dinner for eight at Edgar’s Grille–a $500 value–and two tickets to Goodwill’s 2018 reNew&Brew event. The Savannah River Brewing Co. team present for your imbibing pleasure, the “Re-Grand Opening : No Tour Required!” This is a very exciting time for them as their brewery’s business plan was built for this day. Re-grand opening is not tongue-in-cheek for these guys – it is quite literal. Now, their 3,000 sqft taproom will finally be allowed to operate as the owners and staff envisioned from the beginning. There will be more new beers on tap than ever seen at Savannah River Brewing. Expect to see some fan favorites return as well.
The Hive, a local downtown Augusta favorite, will be grilling appropriately epic burgers while the brewery serves their Blood Orange Wit, Single Hopped IPA, and coffee Brown ale alongside their core line of delicious beers. Saturday, the brewery will release a Soured Ale fermented with cranberries and black currant then blended with pineapple and pear juice, a Dry Hopped Pils: No Jacket Required – unfiltered and dry hopped with Saaz and Perle hops –, and a Belgian Dubbel. A classic take on the style, with complex notes of figs, dates and raisins nestled within freshly baked bread. This a big beer coming in at 8.5%! Don’t worry though, SmokeShow will be there serving savory BBQ to help keep the bigger beers at bay.

Goodwill is joining Macon Beer Co. in celebration of the new Georgia law with a ceremonial “First Pint Pour” event on Sept. 1. The Goodwill-Riverwatch fundraiser is benefiting Goodwill’s job training and career development services. A raffle drawing will be held Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. and the winner will be announced at the “First Pint Pour” on Friday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m. at Macon Beer Co.
One winner will get the first pint poured at Macon’s first modern brewery. The drawing will be held on Aug. 31.
Tickets cost $10 and are available starting Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Macon Beer Co. and at Edgar’s Bistro, 5171 Eisenhower Pkwy, Macon, GA 31206. For more information, go here.
